Woman and children trafficking is a big problem in China. Most of the women who are abducted are sold as prostitutes, or brides to lonely, older men in other poor, rural areas who spend their life savings to purchase a woman. According to World Health Organisation statistics (BBC, 2006), China is the only country in the world where more women commit suicide than men - one woman kills herself every four minutes. The problem is worse in rural areas, where the suicide rate is three times higher than in the cities.
The protagonist of 'Blind Mountain', the movie that will be screened in main programme section in 5th ZFF, young woman, Bai Xuemei (Huang Lu), in the early 1990s who attempts to find work to help pay for her college education. In the process, she is drugged, kidnapped and sold as a bride to a villager in the Qinling Mountains of China's Shaanxi province. The director, Li Young was a feature laureate of 2nd ZFF in 2004 with his debut 'Blind Shaft'.
